second cycle
Glaucous-winged x Herring Gull

Fig 1) This looks like a second cycle Glaucous-winged Gull, with the characteristic black bill on a white bird, but it's getting a pale eye, has a rather pale adult gray mantle, and darkish primaries. December 10, 2011. Davis, California. Photo courtesy of Steve Hampton.

Fig 2) This bird's primaries are within range of some Herring's in second cycle, but the extensive black in the bill and heavy structure suggest a hybrid. February 2, 2012. Sausalito, California. Photo courtesy of Steve Hampton.

Fig 3) This bird has the bulky structure, head shape, and bill shape of Glaucous-winged and the pale icy blue mantle of Herring. The primaries suggest a hybrid. February 14, 2012. Davis, California. Photo courtesy of Steve Hampton.
