Glaucous-winged x Herring Gull
Fig 1) This looks like a second cycle Glaucous-winged Gull, with the characteristic black bill on a white bird, but it's getting a pale eye, has a rather pale adult gray mantle, and darkish primaries. December 10, 2011. Davis, California. Photo courtesy of Steve Hampton.
|Fig 2) This bird's primaries are within range of some Herring's in second cycle, but the extensive black in the bill and heavy structure suggest a hybrid. February 2, 2012. Sausalito, California. Photo courtesy of Steve Hampton.|
|Fig 3) This bird has the bulky structure, head shape, and bill shape of Glaucous-winged and the pale icy blue mantle of Herring. The primaries suggest a hybrid. February 14, 2012. Davis, California. Photo courtesy of Steve Hampton.|
